Web-based Applications

This growing trend is coupled with an equal rise in the number of home–grown or custom applications based in HTML or the web.

The Challenge
Web-based applications bring a new challenge for IT staff, mainly having a performance management tool in place which can differentiate between the various types of HTTP and HTTPS traffic running across the network. The ability to do this is a key requirement as network managers struggle to optimize bandwidth and police the deployment of rogue or unauthorized applications.

Visual UpTime Select enables customers to do a deep-dive into custom application performance with the ability to configure custom applications not only by the port range but also by IP address and URI. This enables greater visibility and a more in-depth analysis of custom applications

The Demand for Data Integration
Many customers have spent a lot of their IT budgets in heavy client server applications. Therefore, they require that application vendors spend time and money in developing Web services as a means of enabling data integration among standard and proprietary custom applications. The growth in Web services can be seen across various vertical industries including retail, manufacturing, financial services and government.

Visual UpTime Select provides a OSS integration model for data integration between third-party vendor products. Visual UpTime Select forwards threshold-specific events and alarms to third-party products and then also provides a context sensitive launch feature which enables enterprise customers to launch UpTime Select by way of a URL. Customers can now expose valuable L1-L7 performance integration data into their home grown solutions, thereby providing a cohesive framework for ensuring network application integrity.

Applications currently deployed across enterprise networks fall into three categories:
  • Planned, new applications that are “meshed”: VoIP, Web services, grid computing.
  • Unplanned applications: new streaming video training server, MS autopatches.
  • Unauthorized applications: a virus, downloading latest funny video clip, listening to favorite radio station.
